One of the biggest decisions you will make during your kitchen or bath remodel is selecting the cabinets to be used. The kitchen and bath industry speak in terms of cabinet grades, specifically Contractor Grade, Semi-Custom, and Custom cabinets as the three categories that the multitude of brands and cabinet lines each belong to. Deciding which type of cabinet category best suits your needs and budget is a good place to start in your selection process.

Regardless of which category of cabinet is most suited to a project, consumers invariably tell our salespeople that they wish to purchase a “quality’ cabinet. Quality seems to be the first priority in cabinet purchase, regardless of process. The only shortfall in approaching a cabinet purchase this way is that it seems everyone defines the word “quality” a little differently! This makes identifying the best fit a challenge. A better approach is to define a 'quality cabinet' as one that best meets your needs and requirements. That is the context in which we will discuss the categories of cabinets.

Custom cabinets are made to order, with your specifications. Working with a skilled designer, you are able to create whatever it is you require. Cabinet sizes, configuration, color, wood species, and door styles are all variable based on your needs. Often Custom cabinetry is a great option for an older home that was not built to current convention. Additionally, Custom cabinets can do wonders in accommodating the needs of particularly tall or short people, kitchens with multiple cooks, kitchens with very specific storage requirements, or designs that require just the right color! If the remodeling project is one that is to be for generations, Custom cabinetry is where the search should start!

Semi-Custom cabinets are the mainstay of the remodeling industry. Modern Semi-custom cabinet suppliers offer vast options of finishes, wood species, cabinet modifications and door styles that, in recent years, were only found in Custom cabinetry. Indeed, Semi-Custom cabinets now are essentially Custom cabinetry with only a handful of limitations. With all the color and style options available, we often sell a set of Semi-Custom cabinets that are unique and that have never been ordered in those exact specifications before! Typical in Semi-Custom cabinetry is cabinetry with matching veneered wood end panels, wood dovetailed drawers, hardware with soft-closing features, and extended warranties. Semi-Custom cabinets are designed to provide decades of use and value for your home, and offer enough variation to suit most home-owners' requirements.

Contractor Grade cabinets are lower priced than Semi-Custom or Custom cabinetry. Typically the cabinet is made of particleboard (sometimes plywood) with the end panels being finished in vinyl laminate closely matching the wooden front frame and wooden door. Drawers are usually made of particleboard with a wood grain printed finish. Drawer slides are side-mounted and visible. Contractor grade cabinets are often available on quick-ship basis, with delivery only a few days from the time of order. Colors and wood species are limited, with a few very popular door styles being offered. Contractor Grade cabinets work best on projects where low price is a prime consideration. If a house is being repaired for the purpose of selling, or if homeowners anticipate moving in the foreseeable future, Contractor grade cabinets make a lot of sense. As the saying goes, you get a lot of bang for your buck here!
